The Brighton Park Elementary and community garden was created through efforts by Ms. Kambasha and her students. The materials were funded by donors who made online donations on donorschoose.org. Throughout the 2017-2017 school year, students planted seeds indoors while preparing the outdoor space. They worked hard to rake, dig and pull weeds. When the seedlings were large enough, they transferred them to the garden and continued to care for them outside. Students were able to grow and harvest many vegetables; pumpkins, cherry tomatoes, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeno peppers, bell peppers, cucumbers, onions, lettuce, kale, cabbage, radishes, and sweet peas. They also planted a large patch of wildflowers to support the declining pollinator population, namely bees and butterflies.
Great job to all our students! Adriana, Crissangel, Christopher, Angel, Omar, Mario, Angelo, Baldemor, Emmily, Fatima!
