Why attendance matters.

Absence Notes

What do i do if my child is absent, tardy, or needs to leave early?

Absences: Attendance is critical to your child’s success as a student and it is important they come to school every day ready to learn.  Generally, the only excused reasons to miss school are illness, religious holiday, family emergency, or death in the immediate family.  If your child has to miss school for one of these reasons, they must bring a note signed by a parent explaining the reason for their absent.  Excessive absences can result in loss of school privilege.

Tardies: It is essential for all students to arrive to school on time. Tardiness is disruptive to the orderly classroom learning process and students miss valuable instruction. If a student arrives after 8:00 a.m., he/she is tardy and will receive a tardy pass at the main entrance.  Any student arriving after 9:00 a.m. could be marked as a half day absense.  Excessive tardiness may result in disciplinary action in accordance to the Chicago Board of Education Student Code of Conduct.

Early Dismissal: Students that need to leave school early due to an illness or appointment must be signed out by a parent or guardian.  Please make every effort to schedule doctor visits and other appointments after school hours.  It is critical that students do not miss any instruction.  Any student that leaves prior to 2:00 p.m. will be given a half day absence according to CPS policy.
